I wrote a simple bootstrap program to make it easy to run Java and other non .NET technologies on Windows Azure. People use it for all kinds of crazy stuff from COBOL payroll to Node.js. Conservative estimates suggest that it runs on a few thousand worker roles. You can get it here.
