In the pub today I mentioned that Java was the most popular programming language and how it had overtaken Cobol. See Paul Graham’s essay Great Hackers .

The Tiobe index makes for interesting reading, but you need to be careful about drawing too many conclusions because of it’s data points.

I also checked the stats on web server technology at Netcraft.
Apache has about 70% of the market and Microsoft 21%.
